A negotiated impeachment

At the time when this article was completed, the Republican senators have requested Biden to postpone the impeachment against Donald Trump, former US President, who has been accused of inciting the attack on the Capitol Hill, the United States of America’s House of the Laws.

This statement by the Republicans can be viewed as a bridge for dialogue laid out towards the current President, Joe Biden. It does not exactly mean they intend to prevent the belated removal of the former President. It is, though, intended to distance, over time, the Republican Party from the chaos that was its support to the Trump Administration. I am convinced that the Republicans want to buy time in order to decide on an internal alternative to Donald Trump.

The events in the Capitol Hill became a real inconvenient; they crossed the red line. Everything had been allowed by then, but the invasion of the House of the Laws by the Trump supporters was seen and felt by most Americans as an assault on democracy and its institutions.

Realizing that if Trump runs again for President of the United States, within four years, may cause serious internal divisions in the Republican Party and knowing that Biden needs space and some peace to govern, the request to delay the impeachment trial may make sense for both parties. There will be intensive negotiations on a number of issues, some of which depend on consensus building between the two parties.
