A vacina não atingirá todos rapidamente, pois obedecerá a prioridades estabelecidas pelos governos. Já a retoma da economia dos países dependerá da interacção de factores multilaterais e multisectoriais. Mas, as duas abrem “uma luz de esperança” em dias melhores. Só o tempo o confirmará.

Outra boa notícia foi a confirmação de Joe Biden como Presidente dos Estados Unidos da América (EUA). Como prevíamos, as instituições venceram a tentativa de assalto ao poder pelo Presidente cessante. Permitiram-nos perceber quão importante é termos instituições fortes que defendam o país de poderes absolutos e ditatorais. Nos EUA, não foi possível a um homem alterar as datas das eleições nem interferir no mecanismo que as regula. Num outro país do nosso continente ou da América Latina e nalguns europeus, em função dos resultados eleitorais, teríamos, muito certamente, um conflito de extrema gravidade ou veríamos adiar as eleições, ou a não-aceitação dos resultados.

Fair winds

We started 2021 with good news. We have a vaccine to begin tackling the effects of Covid-19, both in terms of saving human lives and recovery of countries’ economies. Either one of those bows to slow processes.

The vaccine will not reach everyone quickly; it will be distributed as prioritized by governments. The recovery of national economies will depend on the play of multilateral and multisectoral factors. But both offer “a ray of hope” for better days. Only time will tell.

Another good news was the confirmation of Joe Biden as President of the United States of America. As we predicted, the institutions beat the outgoing President’s attempted assault on power. This allowed us to realize how important it is to have strong institutions that defend the country from absolute and dictatorial powers. In the United States, it was not possible for a man to change election dates or interfere with the mechanism that governs them. In another country in our continent, or in Latin America, or in some European countries, depending on the election results, we would most probably have had an extremely serious conflict or else see the elections postponed or the results not accepted.
