“It is possible to do more with less”

The interruption of the activities in the civil construction sector, for about three months, was one of the main reasons for the company's turnover to drop, leading to the reduction of its workforce to less than half.

The pandemic led FABRIMETAL, an Angolan-owned steel company with Canadian capitals, to a 23.7% reduction in steel sales within the domestic market, which is an equivalent to approximately 16,000 tones.

According to the FABRIMETAL Managing Director, despite the reduction, the company managed to compensate for the losses, exporting 19,500 tons of ingots (intermediate product). “given that the export sales value is lower, the global sales volume was also lower, compared to that of the previous year”, clarified Luís Diogo, who foresees a negative result, estimated at two billion kwanzas, largely influenced by the currency depreciation, given that the company had debts its external suppliers.

Considering the challenges, the Manager of FABRIMETAL informed that it was necessary to reduce its workforce, from 600 to at least 200 employees, allowing the company to realize that it is “possible to do more with less”. However, he explained, workers were being reinstated as conditions were getting better.

Therefore, Luís Diogo also informed that the crisis caused a “drastic reduction in the acquisition of raw material”, which came mostly from the interior of the country, due to the sanitary fence in Luanda. It has also raised the cost of transportation and logistics.

He said that in Angola, among the markets where the company operates, the largest losses were recorded in this sector.
