The great influencer of Digital: The Covid effect on the digitalization of society and the financial sector

We have all heard children say, “when I grow up, I want to be ...”, and where Astronaut or Firefighter appeared before, it started to appear Instagrammer, YouTuber, and related words. Now be prepared for when your child tells you he wants to be a Virus, to explain that while the former are “digital influencers” and potential professions, the latter, even though it is one of the biggest “digital influencers”, will not be an acceptable profession.

In the past few months, we have suffered countless impacts from the pandemic. From mobility limitations to loss of income, through the need for social distance, the imposition of remote work and insecurity regarding the future, among others.

These impacts contributed to accelerate the digitization of society and the financial sector. However, it would be unfair to say that Covid imposed the creation of a digitization program on financial institutions, since most of them already had a program in place. What we saw was an increase in the priority given to these programs, as well as their strategic relevance.

Looking at the client side (company or individual), then the pandemic “imposed” the adoption of digital. Online banking (and other non-face-to-face channels) became the possible means to deal with the situation, revealing in this forced adoption gaps that are difficult to overcome in the short term, but which are now seen as urgent issues.
