O ano 2020 foi dos piores anos que vi correr – e não vi correr poucos... De tal modo ouvi muita gente dizer, antecipadamente: “Feche-se já o 2020!”, o ano maldito para a presente geração de humanos.

Quem viveu o período das duas Guerras Mundiais e quem passou por outras pandemias, acredito que terá sentido também situações similares de angústia e desespero. Mas, para eles, a vida já terminou. Porém, para nós, o Ano Novo inicia com sinais praticamente iguais aos do Ano Velho. E nada indica, por isso, que venha a ser um “Feliz Ano Novo”.

A notícia do surgimento de várias vacinas para a imunização encheu de alento a humanidade, alimentando a esperança de, finalmente, estar próximo do fim o drama da Covid-19.

Mas surge agora a notícia da emergência de mutações do vírus com o aparecimento de variantes com maior capacidade de contaminação do que a estirpe inicial. E o mundo volta a fechar-se, com apelos a um confinamento ainda mais apertado.

The current dilemma of some doctors

It is our custom, towards the end of December, to wish each other a “Happy New Year!”, in a ritual that condenses the hope that the negative events of the year that ends will not be repeated in the year to start. For this year, this desire has become more legitimate than ever because of the darkness that 2020 sprung upon us...

The year 2020 was one of the worst years I’ve witnessed - and I haven’t witnessed a few... So much so that I heard many people say in advance: “Let’s end 2020 now!”, a cursed year for the current generations of humans.

Those who lived through the two World Wars and those who went through other pandemics, I believe, have also have felt similar anguish and despair. But, for them, life is already over. For us, the New Year begins with practically the same signs as the ‘Old Year’. And nothing indicates, therefore, that it will be a “Happy New Year”.

The news of the production of various vaccines for immunization has filled humanity with encouragement, nourishing the hope that, finally, the Covid-19 drama is nearing its end.

But now there are news of mutations of the virus, with variants with greater transmissibility than the initial strain. And the world closes again, with calls for even tighter confinement.
